Assistant Controller

Long Beach, CA, USA

About Brascia Builders

Brascia Builders, Inc., founded in 2009, is a forward-thinking commercial construction company committed to long-term growth, delivering exceptional service to our clients, and strengthening our community. We hold ourselves to high standards in everything we do and are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our accounting and finance team.

Position Overview:

Brascia Builders, Inc. is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to take an active role in the company's day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, project accounting, and month-end processes. This is a hands-on position for an accounting professional who is comfortable working directly in the details while also helping improve processes, controls, and financial reporting.

The Assistant Controller will work closely with the CFO and project management teams and will play an important role in ensuring timely and accurate financial information throughout the organization. The ideal candidate has strong accounting fundamentals, understands job-cost accounting, and enjoys working collaboratively in a fast-paced construction environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • General Accounting: Manage and perform day-to-day accounting functions while ensuring accurate and timely recording of financial transactions.

  • Month-End Close: Assist with and take ownership of significant portions of the monthly and year-end close process, including account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and financial reporting.

  • Project Accounting: Work closely with Project Managers to review job costs, commitments, billings, change orders, profitability, and project financial performance.

  • WIP Reporting: Assist with preparation and analysis of Work-in-Progress schedules, cost-to-complete information, revenue recognition, and project profitability.

  • Accounts Payable: Oversee AP processes, subcontractor and vendor billing, approvals, payment processing, and proper job-cost coding.

  • Accounts Receivable & Billing: Coordinate project billing with Project Managers, monitor accounts receivable and collections, and help ensure timely and accurate owner billings.

  • Payroll: Oversee and support payroll processing, timekeeping, payroll reconciliations, and related reporting.

  • Cash & Treasury: Assist with cash management, banking activity, cash-flow forecasting, and account reconciliations.

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, account reconciliations, and other financial information.

  • Internal Controls: Maintain and improve accounting procedures and internal controls while identifying opportunities to increase efficiency and accuracy.

  • Systems & Process Improvement: Assist with accounting-system administration, technology improvements, integrations, and automation of manual accounting processes.

  • Audit & Compliance: Support annual financial statement reviews or audits, tax preparation, insurance audits, and other compliance activities.

  • Team Support: Provide guidance and oversight to accounting support personnel and assist in developing efficient accounting workflows.

  • Special Projects: Support the CFO with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and other strategic or operational projects as needed.

This position is intentionally designed as a hands-on accounting role.  The Assistant Controller will personally perform accounting work and will not function solely as a manager or reviewer. The successful candidate must be comfortable working directly in the accounting system, researching transactions, preparing reconciliations, processing accounting activity, and resolving day-to-day issues. On any given day, responsibilities may include preparing a journal entry, reconciling a bank account, reviewing an invoice, assisting with a payment run, following up on a receivable, researching a job-cost discrepancy, preparing a WIP schedule, or completing month-end close procedures.

As the individual develops within the position, responsibilities are expected to shift progressively toward oversight, financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, staff development, and management of the overall accounting function.

The ideal candidate will enjoy being hands-on and detail-oriented while possessing the ability and ambition to grow into a financial leadership position.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

  • Approximately 4–7 years of progressive accounting experience preferred.

  • Commercial construction accounting experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience with job-cost accounting strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with general ledger accounting and month-end close.

  • Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, bank reconciliations, and balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Experience preparing or assisting with financial statements and supporting schedules.

  • Experience with accounting or ERP systems.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

Salary Rage: $80,000 - $100,000 annually.  Actual Compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, construction accounting knowledge, and other job-related factors.
